NSF certifications apply to the resin material (Certificate #C0639341). They do not apply to the assembled ShowerSoft product.

The Problem
85% of US homes have hard water. Your shower could be responsible. Learn how hard water damages hair and skin →

Dullness, dryness, frizz, and faster color fade can be worse with hard water buildup.

Hard water can leave skin feeling tight, itchy, or harder to moisturize after showering.

Hard water leaves mineral deposits on your showerhead, tiles, and glass — creating visible white crusty buildup that clogs fixtures over time.
How It Works
A true shower softener using ion exchange technology, not a filter. What's the difference? →
Threads onto your existing shower pipe. No tools. No plumber. No landlord approval needed.
Resin beads swap calcium and magnesium (hard) for sodium (soft). Your water transforms instantly.
Softer feeling hair and skin, plus products that rinse cleaner. Results vary by water hardness and routine.

Ion exchange is the same proven technology used in $5,000+ whole house water softeners. We've miniaturized it for your shower.
Inside ShowerSoft, thousands of tiny resin beads are preloaded with sodium ions (Na+). When hard water flows through, calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions swap places with the sodium.
The hardness minerals get trapped in the resin. The sodium enters your water. Result? Soft water that's gentle on your hair and skin.
Factory performance testing indicates meaningful hardness reduction. Independent third party testing is planned.

Most 1 to 2 person households regenerate every 2 to 3 weeks. Frequency depends on your water hardness (GPG) and how long your showers are — harder water exhausts the resin faster, and longer showers use more capacity per session. ShowerSoft includes two filter elements, which roughly doubles capacity compared to single-element competitors. The regeneration process takes 10 to 30 minutes and uses 500g of table salt.
The table below is based on 10 GPG (US average hardness) with 2 filter elements installed. Use inexpensive hardness test strips (available online, not included) to find your GPG level and adjust accordingly — at 20 GPG expect roughly half the interval shown.
| Household | Shower length | Filters | Total shower time | Showers before regen | Days between regen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | 7 min | 2 | ~112 min | ~16 | ~16 days |
| 1 person | 10 min | 2 | ~110 min | ~11 | ~11 days |
| 2 people | 7 min | 2 | ~112 min | ~16 | ~8 days |
| 2 people | 10 min | 2 | ~110 min | ~11 | ~5–6 days |
| 4 people | 7–10 min | 2 | ~100–120 min | ~11–16 | ~3–4 days |

Yes. Under 5 minutes. Unscrew your shower head, thread ShowerSoft on (hand tight), reattach your shower head. No tools, no plumber, no landlord approval. Works with standard 1/2" US shower pipes. See the step-by-step setup guide for photos and detailed instructions.
Many shower filters are designed to reduce chlorine, odors, and sediment. ShowerSoft is designed to reduce hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) using ion exchange, which is a different process. Filters can help with chlorine (results vary). ShowerSoft is not recommended if chlorine removal is your main goal.
Whole house systems can cost $1,500 to 5,000 plus professional installation and permanent plumbing modifications. ShowerSoft is built for renters and apartment setups. It is portable, installs quickly, and you can take it with you when you move.
Yes. No permanent modifications. It threads onto your shower pipe like a regular shower head. When you move, you can unscrew it and take it with you.
Ion exchange works by swapping hardness minerals for sodium ions. For typical use, the added sodium is small, and you are not drinking shower water. If you have a sodium sensitive medical condition, ask your clinician what is appropriate for you.
The ion exchange resin material used inside ShowerSoft is certified to NSF/ANSI 61, 372, and 44 (Certificate #C0639341). We also provide the resin manufacturer certificate on file. These certificates apply to the resin material, not the assembled ShowerSoft product.

Calcium and magnesium deposits coat the hair cuticle, disrupt the skin barrier, and interfere with every product you use.

Three randomized controlled trials have tested whether water softening helps eczema. Their findings are more nuanced than most marketing suggests.
Water Science
Shower filters address chlorine. Water softeners address calcium and magnesium through ion exchange. They are not the same product.
